Winter Is Coming...
The ColdSteez Guide to Streetwear Hoodies, Winter Fits and Not Looking Like a Walking Sleeping Bag
Winter is coming.
Not the dragons-and-dead-people version. The British version.
Dark at half four. Sideways rain. That bastard wind that somehow gets underneath three layers of clothing. The annual debate over whether putting the heating on in September constitutes financial self-harm.
And right in the middle of it all sits one of the greatest pieces of clothing ever invented:
The hoodie.
Not just gym gear. Not just something you throw on to retrieve the bins. The modern streetwear hoodie has become one of the foundations of contemporary style.
From hip-hop and skate culture to luxury fashion, workwear and independent UK streetwear brands, the hoodie has gone from practical sportswear to a proper wardrobe heavyweight.
At ColdSteez, we reckon a decent hoodie should do three things:
Feel good. Fit properly. Have something to fucking say.
So before winter properly kicks the door in, here is the ColdSteez guide to streetwear hoodies, oversized hoodie fits, graphic hoodies, winter layering and how to wear a hoodie without looking like you've simply given up.
Start exploring the ColdSteez streetwear hoodies collection if you fancy putting any of this theory into practice.
From Sidelines to Streetwear: Where Did the Hoodie Come From?
The hoodie didn't begin life in some painfully expensive fashion studio.
It was practical.
Champion traces the modern hooded sweatshirt back to the 1930s, when the company developed hooded sweatshirts to keep athletes warm between games and training sessions. The basic idea was beautifully uncomplicated: take a sweatshirt, add a hood, stop people freezing their bollocks off.
Then culture got hold of it.
By the 1970s and 1980s, hoodies had become increasingly connected with hip-hop, graffiti, skateboarding and street culture. Smithsonian's history of the garment describes its journey across sport, street culture, fashion and wider social identity, while the rise of hip-hop and skating helped transform it into something much bigger than sportswear.
That matters to streetwear.
Because the hoodie became a blank canvas.
Logos. Crew names. Graphics. Political statements. Skate brands. Record labels. Artwork. Places. Tribes.
You could take one basic shape and make it mean completely different things.
And we're still doing exactly that.
Only now you've got everything from a £100-plus minimalist hoodie to an enormous graphic piece that looks like someone let a tattoo artist loose on a cotton canvas.
Beautiful.
Why Hoodies Work So Well in Streetwear
The secret isn't complicated.
A hoodie gives you volume, structure and layering without demanding much effort.
That relaxed silhouette has become fundamental to modern streetwear. Current styling advice from British GQ puts particular emphasis on balancing oversized hoodies with similarly relaxed trousers and using structured outerwear to control the overall proportions.
A good streetwear hoodie also occupies useful territory between a T-shirt and a coat.
Too cold for a tee?
Hoodie.
Too warm for a massive winter coat?
Hoodie.
Cold enough for both?
Hoodie under the coat.
Going to the pub?
Hoodie.
Going skating?
Hoodie.
Walking the dog at 7am while questioning every decision that brought you to this particular moment?
Hoodie.
Few pieces of clothing can work across that many situations without feeling completely wrong.
What Makes a Good Streetwear Hoodie?
Here's where things get interesting because not all hoodies are created equal.
Some feel substantial the moment you pull them on. Others have all the structural integrity of damp kitchen roll.
There are five things worth looking at.
1. Fabric Weight
Fabric weight is normally expressed as GSM, grams per square metre.
Generally speaking, higher GSM means more material and therefore more weight and structure, although fabric composition and construction matter too.
Printful currently classifies roughly 250 to 300 g/m² as an all-year hoodie weight, with fabrics above 300 g/m² moving further towards dedicated heavyweight winter territory.
There's a bit of an arms race in premium streetwear around heavyweight fabrics.
For example, Represent's hoodie collection currently pushes premium constructions from around 480 GSM upwards, while a Stüssy heavyweight fleece example comes in around 430 GSM.
That's great if you want something seriously dense.
But heavier isn't automatically better.
For everyday British streetwear, a good midweight hoodie can be far easier to layer under jackets, wear indoors and use across autumn, winter and spring.
Several current ColdSteez hoodies sit around 271 to 285 g/m², giving you warmth and structure without turning every coat you own into a compression garment. The CS007H Chat CBD is 271 g/m², the CS008H sits at 281 g/m², and GEN ME uses a 285 g/m² brushed fleece construction.
Enough weight to feel proper. Not so much that you need planning permission to layer it.
2. The Fit
A streetwear hoodie shouldn't simply be three sizes too big.
That's not a fit. That's an admin error.
The best oversized hoodie fit uses proportion intentionally.
You want room through the body and shoulders, enough length to create a relaxed silhouette and enough fabric weight for the garment to hang rather than collapse.
British GQ's current oversized-hoodie advice makes much the same point: volume works when the hoodie still hangs properly and the rest of the outfit acknowledges the larger proportions.
At ColdSteez we generally favour relaxed, roomy and loose streetwear fits because they're easy to layer over tees and work naturally with cargos, relaxed trousers and denim. The current ColdSteez hoodie collection describes the range around oversized fits, clean silhouettes and easy everyday layering.
There's room.
There's movement.
There is not, however, enough fabric to establish a small campsite.
How Should You Wear an Oversized Hoodie?
The easiest rule is:
Balance the silhouette rather than fighting it.
If your hoodie is relaxed, skinny jeans can make the top half look disproportionately huge.
Instead try:
Oversized hoodie + relaxed cargos + chunky trainers
or
Graphic hoodie + straight-leg denim + clean trainers
or
Neutral hoodie + wide trousers + structured jacket
You don't necessarily need everything enormous. You simply want the pieces to look like they belong to the same outfit.
A hoodie with decent structure does half the work for you.
How to Layer a Hoodie in Winter
This is where the hoodie earns its wages.
A streetwear hoodie under a jacket is one of the easiest cold-weather outfits to get right.
MR PORTER notes that hoodies work particularly well under worker jackets, bombers and parkas, while British GQ recommends substantial fabrics under puffers, wool coats and winter outerwear.
The trick is giving each layer enough room.
Hoodie + Puffer
Possibly the easiest winter streetwear combination on Earth.
Let the hood sit outside the collar. Pair with relaxed trousers or cargos and substantial trainers.
Done.
Hoodie + Bomber Jacket
Excellent if you want something slightly cleaner.
Keep the bomber relatively roomy and let the hoodie provide the softer layer underneath.
Hoodie + Overshirt or Worker Jacket
Ideal for autumn and milder winter days.
A darker graphic hoodie underneath a neutral overshirt can look ridiculously good.
Hoodie + Long Coat
This is where streetwear gets a little more grown-up.
Black or grey hoodie. Relaxed trousers. Long wool coat. Clean trainers.
Suddenly the humble hoodie has got somewhere important to be.
Hoodie + Denim Jacket
Still works.
Just make sure the denim jacket actually has enough space underneath it. Nobody needs to spend the evening moving around with their arms at 45 degrees.
What Do You Wear Under a Hoodie?
Keep it simple.
A good-quality T-shirt underneath gives you warmth without bulk and creates a cleaner layered look when the tee drops slightly below the hem.
White, black and neutral tees are the easiest.
If your hoodie has a big graphic, let that be the noise.
If the hoodie is minimal, you can get away with stronger trousers, footwear or outerwear.
ColdSteez styling is deliberately built around that principle:
The fit does the work.
Graphic Hoodies vs Minimal Hoodies
Both belong in a proper streetwear rotation.
The question is what you want the hoodie to do.
Minimal Hoodies
These are the everyday weapons.
Small logos. Controlled typography. Simple embroidery. Neutral colourways.
They work brilliantly with louder trousers, jackets and trainers because they're not fighting for attention.
Graphic Hoodies
A proper graphic hoodie becomes the centre of the outfit.
Portrait artwork, typography, illustrations, colour and back prints can turn the hoodie itself into the statement.
That's where you keep everything around it relatively restrained.
One great graphic.
Not seventeen unrelated ideas having a fist fight across your torso.
That's one of the things we try to keep consistent at ColdSteez. Even when the artwork is bold, the garment still needs to be wearable.
The ColdSteez Hoodie Rotation
This is where things get distinctly Steezy.
We've built the range so you don't have eight versions of exactly the same bloody hoodie.
Different graphics. Different moods. Different levels of noise.
CS002H: The Rebirth of Cool
The ColdSteez CS002H Rebirth of Cool Tag Hoodie takes the brand's central idea and slaps it across a relaxed streetwear hoodie.
Graffiti-style artwork gives it the street hit while the medium-heavy 50/50 cotton-poly construction, double-lined hood and relaxed fit make it an easy everyday layer.
This is where to start if you want classic ColdSteez streetwear without going completely feral.
CS003H: Camo Block
Yes, Camo Block.
Not Arctic Block. We're putting that one to bed. 😂
The ColdSteez CS003H Camo Block Hoodie uses a bold camouflage-inspired stacked graphic with an oversized streetwear direction.
It's the sort of hoodie that works particularly well with black cargos, washed denim and clean neutral trainers.
Graphic enough to register.
Controlled enough to wear regularly.
CS005H: SEND IT
Some clothes encourage sensible behaviour.
This isn't one of them.
The ColdSteez CS005H SEND IT Hoodie uses a bold chest graphic on a warm 50/50 cotton-poly body with a relaxed streetwear fit, double-lined hood and classic kangaroo pocket. It's currently available across seven colourways in the live range.
Cold morning?
Send it.
Last train home?
Send it.
Terrible idea?
Probably send it.
CS006H: Samurai Skull
The ColdSteez CS006H Samurai Skull Hoodie moves things into darker territory.
The detailed Samurai Skull artwork brings together old-world warrior imagery and contemporary graphic streetwear, while its medium-heavy ring-spun cotton blend and loose silhouette give it enough structure for winter layering.
Pair it with washed black denim, cargos or darker winter layers and let the artwork carry the outfit.
CS007H: Chat CBD
Digital overload meets natural chill.
The ColdSteez CS007H Chat CBD Hoodie is one of the stranger members of the family, in a good way.
It uses a 271 g/m² 50/50 cotton-poly blend, double-lined hood and relaxed silhouette, with the Chat CBD graphic sitting right in that ColdSteez zone between internet culture and streetwear nonsense.
Less ChatGPT. More Chat CBD.
CS008H: Blend In, Stand Out
Bit of a contradiction.
Entirely deliberate.
The ColdSteez CS008H Blend In, Stand Out Hoodie is built around a dark cinematic portrait in deep teal and green tones.
At 281 g/m², with a relaxed loose fit, side seams, kangaroo pocket and adjustable hood, it sits neatly between substantial streetwear and something you can comfortably layer under winter outerwear.
Wear it with dark denim and let the artwork breathe.
CS009H: Spiralling Out
For days when everything is absolutely fine.
Until it isn't.
The ColdSteez CS009H Spiralling Out Hoodie centres on a hypnotic circular graphic with smaller ColdSteez detailing at the upper back.
Its loose streetwear fit, medium-heavy ring-spun cotton blend and side-seamed construction make it especially good for layering.
Overthink it.
Overdo it.
Spiral accordingly. 🌀
CS010H: GEN ME
Same species.
Different generation.
The ColdSteez CS010H GEN ME Hoodie strips the graphic right back again.
The 285 g/m² fleece, smooth cotton face, brushed interior and dropped shoulders create a comfortable relaxed silhouette without turning the whole thing into a duvet with sleeves.
It's one of the easiest ColdSteez hoodies to build a complete winter outfit around.
How ColdSteez Fits Into Modern Streetwear
We aren't pretending ColdSteez exists in some magical hoodie vacuum.
Streetwear has some serious history.
Stüssy continues to work across graphic fleece, logo hoodies and relaxed constructions.
Carhartt WIP takes its workwear DNA into heavyweight brushed polycotton hoodies and loose fits.
Represent pushes heavily into premium heavyweight and oversized silhouettes.
And Champion is sitting there with nearly a century of hoodie heritage wondering what took everybody so long.
They're all different interpretations of the same brilliant piece of clothing.
ColdSteez occupies its own little corner.
Independent UK streetwear.
Bold graphics without making every hoodie look like a billboard.
Relaxed fits without simply sizing everything up three places.
Midweight fabrics you can actually layer.
Designs that adults can wear without looking as though they've stolen a teenager's Fortnite merch.
That's the territory.
Where Can You Wear a Streetwear Hoodie?
Pretty much anywhere casual clothing makes sense.
That's part of the appeal.
Around Town
Hoodie, relaxed jeans, trainers.
Done in thirty seconds.
Looks like you spent longer.
At the Pub
Graphic hoodie with clean trousers or dark denim.
Perfectly acceptable.
Especially when the alternative is that jumper your aunt bought you in 2018.
Travelling
Hoodies are basically built for trains, airports and long drives.
Warm. Comfortable. Hood available when the bloke opposite starts watching TikTok without headphones.
Skateparks and BMX
This one's in the DNA.
Loose silhouettes, movement, warmth and a culture that helped shape modern streetwear itself. Skate and hip-hop subcultures were important parts of the hoodie's transition from sportswear into streetwear.
Work
Depends entirely on the workplace.
Creative studio? Almost certainly.
Solicitor appearing before the Supreme Court? Maybe give the Samurai Skull a day off.
Dates
Yes.
A good hoodie paired with proper trousers, clean footwear and a decent jacket can look considerably sharper than trying too hard.
The hoodie isn't the problem.
The rest of the outfit usually is.
Black, Grey or Colour?
If you're buying your first proper streetwear hoodie, black is almost impossible to cock up.
British GQ describes black hoodies as particularly versatile because they can work with worn denim, structured jackets and more refined outerwear. Grey provides an equally flexible base but benefits from added texture or contrast elsewhere in the outfit.
Black Hoodie
Easy.
Works with nearly everything.
Makes colourful artwork hit harder.
Grey Hoodie
Classic sportswear energy.
Great with black, navy, olive and denim.
White Hoodie
Cleaner and louder.
Looks brilliant.
Also attracts tomato sauce from approximately four postcodes away.
Colour Hoodies
If you're going green, blue, yellow or something stronger, keep the rest of the outfit controlled.
You need one conversation happening at a time.
How Should You Look After a Graphic Hoodie?
A good graphic streetwear hoodie deserves slightly more respect than the pile of gym gear currently living at the bottom of your washing basket.
For most ColdSteez styles:
Wash at 30°C.
Turn graphic garments inside out.
Avoid aggressive bleaching.
Don't iron directly across printed artwork.
Use lower drying temperatures where the care label allows it.
And if you've worn it every day for two weeks, washing it is no longer optional regardless of how good the fit looks.
Are Hoodies Just for Winter?
Absolutely not.
Winter is simply when they become ridiculously useful.
During spring and autumn, a hoodie can become the outer layer itself.
On cooler summer evenings, lighter hoodies work with shorts and trainers.
GQ similarly recommends lighter jersey or French terry for warmer months and heavier fleece or layered constructions for colder weather.
That versatility is precisely why a decent hoodie tends to get far more wear than trend-driven pieces.
Streetwear Hoodie FAQs
What is the best material for a streetwear hoodie?
There isn't one universal winner.
Cotton feels soft and breathable. Polyester adds durability and shape retention. Cotton-poly blends combine characteristics of both, which is why they're so common in everyday streetwear hoodies. Brushed fleece gives you additional warmth for colder weather.
What GSM is good for a hoodie?
Roughly 250 to 300 g/m² sits in the useful midweight territory for everyday hoodies, while genuinely heavyweight winter styles often go above 300 g/m².
Many ColdSteez hoodies sit in that versatile midweight area.
Should streetwear hoodies be oversized?
They don't have to be, but relaxed and oversized fits remain central to contemporary streetwear.
The key is proportion.
Roomy should look intentional, not accidental.
What trousers go with an oversized hoodie?
Cargos, relaxed jeans, wide-leg trousers and good joggers all work.
Match the proportions.
Can adults wear graphic hoodies?
Obviously.
The difference between adult graphic streetwear and novelty clothing is largely about art direction, colour, placement and restraint.
One strong graphic can look far more considered than covering every available centimetre in noise.
Can you wear a hoodie under a coat?
Yes, and winter is arguably when the hoodie works best.
Bombers, parkas, puffers, worker jackets and relaxed wool coats can all work over hoodies provided the outer layer leaves enough room through the shoulders and chest.
Are hoodies unisex?
Many modern streetwear hoodies use relaxed silhouettes that work extremely well across genders. Fit preference matters more than the label stitched into the neck.
What makes a premium hoodie?
Fabric, construction, fit, hood shape, cuffs, stitching, artwork quality and how well the garment retains its shape all matter.
A massive GSM number on its own doesn't magically turn a hoodie into haute couture.
Winter Is Coming. Dress Accordingly.
Streetwear changes constantly.
The hoodie doesn't.
It survived sportswear.
Hip-hop.
Skateboarding.
Britpop.
Nu metal.
The 2000s.
Skinny jeans.
NFTs.
And whatever the hell we're currently calling this decade.
There's a reason.
A good hoodie is functional enough to keep pulling on and expressive enough to make your own.
For ColdSteez that means relaxed streetwear fits, bold graphic designs, comfortable midweight constructions and enough attitude to stop the whole thing becoming another beige basic.
Winter is coming.
Might as well look fucking decent while it's doing it.
